Mold Removal & Remediation

What are molds?

The term "molds" describes more than 100,000 types of microscopic fungi which readily grow on wet organic surfaces. When excess moisture is present, molds spread and proliferate rapidly. A dark, damp, and humid basement is an ideal place for their proliferation. Spores are tiny particles, less than 4 microns in size, that are the "seeds" by which molds spread. These spores are so small that as many as 250,000 of them can fit on a pin head and a person can inhale as many as 750,000 of them per minute!

When and Why do they appear?

Mold spores are present in all indoor and outdoor environments and may lay dormant, waiting for adequate growth conditions. These conditions include warm temperatures, a "food" source and their main trigger - moisture and humidity.

Within days following water damage to a building, a simple straight forward drying project can easily turn into a more complicated and potentially dangerous mold contamination project. Flooded basements, broken water pipes, roof leaks, natural flooding, and other many other water damage causes may cause hidden mold problems in both residential and commercial buildings. Without proper control, spores can germinate rapidly resulting in widespread growth of molds. See more information in our Knowledgebase

Molds are airborne and get everywhere. Through the air, it gets around your home and finds new, moist places to grow and colonize. Just because you don't see big black fuzzy clumps growing on your wall doesn't mean it's not there. If it is growing in one area of your home, doesn't it make sense that it is in other areas as well? It is not confined to your basement Why fix it?

Mold removal & remediation is important for various reasons including structural damage to your home, cosmetic damage (black fuzzy clumps growing in your basement is not very attractive), not to mention the health hazards. Molds can produce a variety of allergenic substances, odorous chemicals, and toxic metabolites. Indoors, high levels of molds can cause a spectrum of health effects.

Allergic symptoms, such as mucous membrane irritation, rhinitis, and rashes, are the most common problems, but more severe effects (like asthma attacks, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, infections, or toxic reactions) may also occur.

How do I solve the problem?

Mold removal and remediation may be as simple as installing a good dehumidifier in your basement to reduce the humidity level. If the problem is more severe and a dehumidifier-air purifier will not resolve the problem, then you need to hire a professional mold removal-remediation contractor. These contractors are experts in the field and can provide you with an inspection, provide more detailed information, and give you an estimate to resolve the problem.
